Artist's Description
Driving in the Azores, an archipelago of islands between the U.S. and Europe, can be slow because of all of the scenic overlooks demanding your attention. I captured this image at Miradouro de Santa Iria on the north coast of Sao Miguel Island. Various Azorean islands are divided up by walls constructed of black lava by monks in the 16th Century to protect their grape vines from the salty sea spray. The black rock also retained heat, keeping the vines from cooling too much during the night.

I picked up a film camera when I was in my early teens and have put it down only once - In 2003 when I replaced it with a digital camera. Nature photography has been my passion from the beginning, but my portfolio has expanded over the years to include travel, street photography and blues music. As a travel journalist, now retired from the Chicago Tribune but still trekking on a freelance basis, I have photographed in more than 60 countries on all seven continents. I admit to a love affair with the American West and Southwest and now live in the red-rock country of southwest Utah.
