Awakening in a modest resort in the small settlement of Bakkie, Suriname, we were delighted to see the morning sun backlighting the plant life outside our cabin. To reach our lodgings we had ridden in a narrow motorized canoe on tiny Warappa Creek. Suriname is on the northeast coast of South America.
About Phil Marty
I picked up a film camera when I was in my early teens and have put it down only once - In 2003 when I replaced it with a digital camera. Nature photography has been my passion from the beginning, but my portfolio has expanded over the years to include travel, street photography and blues music. As a travel journalist, now retired from the Chicago Tribune but still trekking on a freelance basis, I have photographed in more than 60 countries on all seven continents. I admit to a love affair with the American West and Southwest and now live in the red-rock country of southwest Utah.
