The stairway in the lighthouse at Ponta dos Capelinhos on the island of Faial in the Azores forms a mesmerizing spiral. The lighthouse construction began in 1894 and it was put into service in 1903. It was deactivated in 1957 after a volcanic eruption.

I picked up a film camera when I was in my early teens and have put it down only once - In 2003 when I replaced it with a digital camera. Nature photography has been my passion from the beginning, but my portfolio has expanded over the years to include travel, street photography and blues music. As a travel journalist, now retired from the Chicago Tribune but still trekking on a freelance basis, I have photographed in more than 60 countries on all seven continents.
